As we study 1 Thessalonians 3 we will see the loving heart of Paul as he encourages this newer group of believers. We will also examine the ways people can be strengthened or weakened by temptations and trials. God wants us to stand strong in the storms of life.

1 Thessalonians 3:1-4
So when we
could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in
Athens. 2
We sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in
spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your
faith, 3
so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite
well that we are destined for them. 4 In fact, when we were with you, we kept telling
you that we would be persecuted. And it turned out that way, as you well
know.
1 Peter 4:12-15 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on
you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice
inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be
overjoyed when His glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name
of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If
you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of
criminal, or even as a meddler.

Trials
are allowed by God to correct or direct us
Matthew 13:20-21 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and
at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a
short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly
fall away.
2 Timothy 3:12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted,
1 Thessalonians 3:5 For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I
sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter
had tempted you and that our labors might have been in vain.
2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the
serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and
pure devotion to Christ.

1. God
will not tempt people to do evil.
James 1:12-14 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the
test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to
those who love Him. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For
God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each person is
tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
·
2. God
will always provide a way out of the temptation.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is
common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond
what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so
that you can endure it.

Some
excuses for not obeying God:
·
It’s
just this one time
·
No one
will know
·
It won’t
hurt anyone
·
Everyone
is doing it
·
It can’t
be wrong if it feels so good
·
God will
forgive me
·
This
helps me financially
James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you.

Thessalonians 3:6-8 But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has
brought good news about your faith and love. He has told us that you
always have pleasant memories of us and that you long to see us, just as we
also long to see you. 7 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in
all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your
faith. 8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.
·
When a
trial happens:
·
Satan
wants to hurt us
·
God
wants to help us – Correct and/or Direct us
·
God
wants us to stand firm in our faith no matter the circumstances
1 Thessalonians 3:9-12 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in
the presence of our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly
that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. 11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord
Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12 May the Lord make your love
increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does
for you.
1 John 4:19-21 We love because He first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a
brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and
sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And
He has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother
and sister.
1 Thessalonians 3:13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be
blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus
comes with all his holy ones
