Biblical Doctrine: A set of beliefs
taught in Bible
1 Timothy 1:1-2 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of
Christ Jesus our hope, 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from
God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Acts 16:1-3 Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy
lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. The
believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him
along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in
that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
·
Am I a true disciple of Jesus?
·
1. Knows and follows Jesus
·
2. Changing to become more like Jesus
·
3. Lives on mission for Jesus
1 Timothy 1:3-4 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus
so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines
any longer 4 or
to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things
promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by
faith.
·
Focus on obeying what we do know from scripture.
Avoid the speculations.
Acts 20:28-31 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has
made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His
own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and
will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort
the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard!
Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day
with tears.
·
Motives behind False Teachings:
·
People pleasing
·
Excuses for sin
·
Prideful manipulation for selfish gain
·
Jealousy for power/position
1 Timothy 1:5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart
and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
·
Correct false teachings with truth in love
1 Timothy 1:6-7 Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk.
7 They want to be
teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what
they so confidently affirm.
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine.
Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number
of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
1 Timothy 1:8-11 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. 9 We also know that the law
is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and
sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or
mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave
traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound
doctrine 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he
entrusted to me
·
The Purpose of the Law is to show us we are
sinners in need of a Savior.
Romans 3:20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works
of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.

·
Doctrine Safety:
·
1. Did Jesus teach it?
·
2. Did the early church practice it?
·
3. Did the Apostle Paul expound on it?
·
All our spiritual experiences need to be judged
though scripture.
·
How to keep from being deceived:
·
Research the Truth from Scripture
·
Seek trusted and respected counsel
·
Don’t make quick, emotional decisions
·
Focus on doing what is clear in Scripture
·
God has entrusted us to share the gospel to
those He loves
2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are
convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And He died for all,
that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died
for them and was raised again.
