1 Corinthians 5 emphasizes the importance for spiritual leaders to tackle sin within the church by balancing grace and truth. It teaches that church discipline should not be viewed as punishment, but a way to help individuals return to a right relationship with God, highlighting the necessity of addressing unrepented sin with love. Additionally, we will learn steps on how to approach sin in the lives of those we have relationships with.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his
glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of
grace and truth.
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus
Christ.
1 Corinthians 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of
a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s
wife.
·
If leaders don’t deal with the problem, they
become the problem.
· As
spiritual leaders we must:
·
Provide – Teaching, Leadership, Direction and be
an Example
·
Protect – Unity, Biblical Truth, Administer
Discipline
1 Corinthians 5:2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have
put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?
· Do I tolerate or confront unrepented sin?
Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
1 Corinthians 5:3-5 For my part, even though I am not physically
present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I
have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has
been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of
our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his
spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
Hebrews 12:11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on,
however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have
been trained by it.
·
Truth without grace is harsh. Grace without
truth is meaningless
· Before
the Conversation
·
Examine our heart first – we need love and
concern, not judgment or anger
·
Pray for guidance, wisdom, open heart and the
right words
·
Choose a private setting
·
Sometimes we need another person with us
· During
the Conversation
·
Address with gentleness – use tones and body
language to show grace
·
Express care - "I'm talking to you because
I care about you"
·
Be specific but respectful about what you've
observed or heard
·
Listen - give them time to respond, seek
understanding
·
Ask questions rather than making accusations -
"Can you help me understand what's happening?"
1 Corinthians 5:6-8 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a
little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be
a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has
been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with
malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Proverbs 22:24-25 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one
easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.
1 Corinthians 5:9-10 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with
sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the
greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave
this world.
·
Don’t
separate ourselves from unbelievers. Reach them for Christ
1 Corinthians 5:11-13 But now I am writing to you that you must not
associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually
immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not
even eat with such people. 12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside
the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those
outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”
