Tonight, we learn through Jephthah and the Ephraimites how far off course God’s people can go. Thankfully because of the work of Jesus we can also learn how God’s people can be a light and bring hope to the world.

Judges 12:1 The Ephraimite forces were called out, and they crossed over to Zaphon.
They said to Jephthah,“Why did you go to fight the Ammonites without calling us
to go with you? We’re going to burn down your house over your head.”
Deuteronomy 7:7-8 The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were
more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
8 But it was because
the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought
you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the
power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
Genesis 12:1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your
father’s household to the land I will show you.
Genesis 15:6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Judges 12:2-3 Jephthah answered, “I and my people were engaged in a great struggle with
the Ammonites, and although I called, you didn’t save me out of their hands. 3
When I saw that you
wouldn’t help, I took my life in my hands and crossed over to fight the
Ammonites, and the Lord gave me the victory over them. Now why have you come up
today to fight me?”
Matthew 12:25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided
against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided
against itself will not stand.
1 Corinthians 1:10-15 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you
say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united
in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me
that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow
Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another,
“I follow Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the
name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,
15 so no one can say
that you were baptized in my name.
Romans 3:23 For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
WHOEVER believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there
male and female, FOR YOU ARE ALL ONE in Christ Jesus.
Judges 12:4-6 Jephthah then called together the men of Gilead and fought against
Ephraim. The Gileadites struck them down because the Ephraimites had said, “You
Gileadites are renegades from Ephraim and Manasseh.” 5 The Gileadites captured
the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a survivor of Ephraim
said, “Let me cross over,” the men of Gilead asked him, “Are you an
Ephraimite?” If he replied, “No,” 6 they said, “All right, say ‘Shibboleth.’” If he
said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not pronounce the word correctly, they
seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. Forty-two thousand
Ephraimites were killed at that time.
Isaiah 49:6 It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of
Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light
for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.
Matthew 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how
can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be
thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put
it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your
light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
Father in heaven.
Judges 12:7 Jephthah led Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was
buried in a town in Gilead.
