In this first part of 1 Timothy 5 we will study the topic of Responsible Generosity. We will learn when to be generous and help those in need and when should we not help.

1 Timothy 5:1-2 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your
father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as
sisters, with absolute purity.
Titus 2:15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with
all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
·
Correct with encouragement.
·
Honor and respect senior citizens
Leviticus 19:32 “‘Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and
revere your God. I am the Lord.
1 Timothy 5:3-8 Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. 4 But if a widow has
children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their
religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their
parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. 5 The widow who is really in
need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to
pray and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even
while she lives. 7 Give the people these instructions, so that no one may be open to blame.
8 Anyone who does
not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has
denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
·
Help meet the needs of your family without being
an enabler.
1 Timothy 5:9-10 No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty,
has been faithful to her husband, 10 and is well known for her good deeds,
such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the
Lord’s people, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of
good deeds.
·
Biblical needs test:
·
1. No family to help
·
2. Older/Unable to work
·
3. Godly lifestyle
·
4. History of faithfully serving
·
Bible teaches 3 types of giving:
·
10% (tithe) to your local church
·
Offerings – missions, various
ministries/causes
·
Alms – help the poor and those in need
·
Be a generous and responsible giver
1 Timothy 5:11-12 As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their
sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. 12
Thus they bring
judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge.
1 Corinthians 7:7-9 I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you
has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the
unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.
But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to
marry than to burn with passion.
1 Timothy 5:13-15 Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house
to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk
nonsense, saying things they ought not to. 14 So I counsel younger
widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy
no opportunity for slander. 15 Some have in fact already turned away to follow
Satan.
·
Following
Satan looks very different than following Jesus
2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 For even when we were with you, we gave you this
rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” We hear that some among
you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such
people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the
food they eat.
·
Don’t waste your life. Be productive for Jesus.
1 Timothy 5:16 If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care, she should
continue to help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the
church can help those widows who are really in need.
·
Let’s be generous like our Lord. We were created
in His image.
