This week as we study 2 Timothy 2:1-13 we will learn 5 principles for being “Faithful to the End”. We will also be challenged and inspired by a powerful testimony from someone who is finding purpose in their suffering.

2 Timothy 2:1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 12:9 But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you,
for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more
gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses
entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

Our Vision: “following Jesus and making
disciples”
2 Timothy 2:3-4 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of
Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs,
but rather tries to please his commanding officer.
Philippians 3:10 I want to know Christ--yes, to know the power of His resurrection and
participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death,
·
1) Faithfulness requires us to be submissive and
not distracted
2 Timothy 2:5 Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the
victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules.
·
2) Faithfulness requires obeying God’s Word and
focused on His goal
2 Timothy 2:6 The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the
crops.
·
3) Faithfulness is rewarded but requires
patience and hard work
2 Timothy 2:7-10 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all
this. 8 Remember
Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am
suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s
word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too
may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
·
Am I willing to suffer for the Gospel or do I
live for personal comfort?
Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the
cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 Consider Him who
endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose
heart.
·
4) Faithfulness requires us look to Jesus when
suffering
2 Timothy 2:11-13 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live
with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he
will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
·
5) Faithfulness requires publicly confessing
Jesus as Lord
Matthew 10:32-33 Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him
before My Father in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny
him before My Father in heaven.
