As we start the book of Joshua, we’ll review how Israel’s lack of faith kept them from entering “God’s rest”. We’ll also review the covenant promises God made to Abraham & see them fulfilled through Joshua’s strong faith.

Numbers 14:9 (Joshua and Caleb) “…do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid
of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is
gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.”
·
Main Point #1 When life tests us and
we’re afraid, have faith and TRUST God! He makes the impossible, possible!
Hebrews 4:1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be
careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.
Hebrews 4:8-10 If Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about
another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for
anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from
his.
Joshua 1:1-2a After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua
son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2a “Moses my servant is dead.
·
Main Point #2 Servants of the Lord are
God’s tools, and ALL tools are replaceable. God’s will is that His
work will continue!
Joshua 1:2b-3 Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River
into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every
place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.
Romans 18:16-17 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
17 Now if we are
children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ…
Joshua 1:4-5 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great
river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in
the west. 5 No
one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with
Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
·
Main Point # 3 Have faith, and don’t
worry if you feel “average”. Average people can do GREAT things in God’s
power!
Numbers 27:18 The LORD replied, (to Moses) “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit
in him, and lay your hands on him.
Joshua 1:6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to
inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
Genesis 12:1-3 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make
your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you,
whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed
through you
Joshua 1:7-8 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my
servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that
you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do
everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
·
Main Point # 4 Obey God! His promises are
conditional. They aren’t earned by works, they are unlocked by
our OBEDIENCE
Joshua 1:9-11 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be
afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you
wherever you go.” 10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and
tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you
will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD
your God is giving you for your own.’”
·
Main Point # 5 Be Ready! Knowing
God’s Word keeps us well-informed. Obeying it makes us well-prepared for
eternity!
Joshua 1:12-18 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua
said, 13 “Remember
the command that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you after he said, ‘The
LORD your God will give you rest by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your children
and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan,
but all your fighting men, ready for battle, must cross over ahead of your
fellow Israelites. You are to help them
15 until the LORD
gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken
possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them. After that, you may go
back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you
east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.” 16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have
commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed
Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the LORD your God be with you as he was
with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may
command them, will be put to death.Only be strong and courageous!”
Genesis 15:13 Then the LORD said to him (Abraham), “Know for certain that for four
hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and
that they will be enslaved and mistreated there.
Genesis 15:16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the
sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”
