After miraculously crossing the Jordan river in Joshua 4, God instructs the children of Israel to set up a memorial for all generations as a reminder how He guided them. Joshua was then instructed that the young men be circumcised and to celebrate the Passover after neglecting these rites while wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. God was calling His people back to practicing the priority of enjoying their relationship with Him.

The end of Chapter 6 tells the story of how Rahab and her family were shown favor by God because she demonstrated faith, as she hid the spies from danger. In Joshua 15 -20, Joshua encourages Israel to complete their assignment of occupying the entire promised land. They do, but they do it incompletely, on their own terms. We’ll examine the spiritual consequences of Israel’s failure to separate themselves from the behavior and beliefs of the world.

Joshua 23 outlines the first of two farewell addresses from Joshua before his death. He first looks back to remind the leaders of Israel of God’s great faithfulness over multiple generations. Then he looks forward with a warning about the dangers of departing from God. Joshua exhorted them to continue building from the foundational truth to love the Lord above and before anything else.
